You will not, necessarily, know ahead of time if you’re the target of a federal investigation. You may have some suspicion if federal agents are attempting to question you; even if they propose to you that they’re questioning you relative to only being a witness, relative to a federal criminal investigation. Before you ever speak to federal agents, I would advise that you call a lawyer and speak with them about what, if any, risk you might be facing by speaking to a federal agent.

If you are the target of a federal investigation, or you suspect you could become the target of a federal investigation, I would also urge you to call a lawyer and get advice from him or her regarding what you should do in that scenario.
